Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 435
Tell not the pretender the secrets of love and drink,
that he may die unknowing in the pain of self-worship.
Be a lover — else one day the world's affair will close,
the pattern of the goal left unread from being's loom.
Last night how sweetly that idol spoke in my Magians' hall:
'What have you to do with infidels, if you bow to no idol?'
My sultan, in God's name, your tress has broken us;
how long shall the blackness deal such long-handed wrong?
In safety's corner, how can one stay chaste and veiled,
while your narcissus keeps whispering us the riddles of drink?
That day I foresaw all these tumults now let loose,
when, out of wilfulness, you sat not with us a breath.
Your love will hand Hafez over to the hand of the flood;
like lightning, from this turmoil, did you think you had escaped?
