← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 292

By the pomp, the rank, the majesty of Shah Shuja I swear:
with no man have I a quarrel for wealth or for degree.
Enough of home-brewed wine — bring on the Magian vintage;
the wine-companion is come, O friend — farewell now to repentance!
For God's sake, wash my patched cloak and rinse it clean with wine,
for from these times I catch no scent of any good.
Behold — he goes dancing to the lament of the harp,
the very man who once forbade the hearing of the sama'.
Cast a glance upon your lovers, in thanks for this rich grace:
that I am an obedient slave, and you an obeyed king.
We thirst for the bounty of one draught of your cup, and yet
we make no bold demand, we press no wearying suit.
May God not sunder the brow and cheek of Hafez
from the dust before the threshold of Shah Shuja's grandeur.
