Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 83
If from the hand of your musky curl some fault was done — it was done;
and if from your Hindu mole some wrong befell us — it befell.
If the lightning of love has burned a wool-clad wretch's harvest — it burned;
if a fortunate king's oppression has fallen on a beggar — it fell.
Upon the Path let there be no rankling of the mind — bring the wine;
whatever turbid grief you meet, since a clearness has passed — it passed.
The play of love asks patient endurance — O heart, stand your ground;
if there was a vexation — there was; if a fault was done — it was done.
If the Friend's arch glance has borne off the burden from a heart — it bore;
and if between the soul and the Soul's-love some matter passed — it passed.
From the whisperers of tales came vexations without number; and yet
if among the fellow-sitters an ill word was spoken — it was spoken.
Tell the preacher not to fault Hafez, who has quit the cloister;
why fetter the foot of freedom? — if he went somewhere, he went.
