Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 60
That famed courier who arrived from the Friend's land
brought the soul's amulet from the Friend's musk-scented script.
Fairly it gives sign of the majesty and beauty of the Friend;
fairly it recounts the glory and gravity of the Friend.
I gave my heart for the glad tidings, and I bear the shame
of this counterfeit coin of mine that I offered to the Friend.
Thanks be to God that, by the aid of contriving fortune,
all the affairs of the Friend go according to desire.
What choice have the sphere's course and the moon's revolution?
They wheel about according to the choosing of the Friend.
Though the wind of sedition throw both worlds into turmoil,
we hold the lamp of the eye and the road of awaiting the Friend.
Bring me a jewel-collyrium, O breeze of dawn,
from that fortunate dust that became the pathway of the Friend.
We hold the threshold of love and the posture of pleading;
let us see whom sweet sleep bears off to the Friend's embrace.
If the foe should breathe with intent against Hafez, what dread?
thanks be to God that I am not ashamed before the Friend.
