← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 492

A greeting, like the sweet scent of familiarity,
to that pupil of the eye, the brightness of the eye.
A salutation, like the light in the heart of the pious,
to that candle of the sanctuary of piety.
I see none of the old companions remaining in their place;
my heart has turned to blood with grief — Cupbearer, where are you?
Turn not your face from the Magian lane, for there
they sell the key that unlocks every difficulty.
The bride of the world, though she stand at beauty's summit,
carries her faithless ways beyond all bound.
My worn heart, if it hold any high resolve,
will not seek the balm of the stony-hearted.
Where do they sell the Sufi-felling wine?
For I am in a fever from the hand of hypocritical piety.
The comrades so broke the covenant of friendship
that you would say there was never any bond at all.
If you leave me in peace, O greedy self,
I shall play the king even in beggary.
I will teach you the alchemy of felicity:
parting — a parting from an evil companion.
Make no complaint, Hafez, of the tyranny of the age;
what do you know, O slave, of the workings of the Godhead?
