Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 450
An age now you have kept us watching in suspense;
the sincere you hold not in the manner of the rest.
No corner-glance of favour ever opened to me;
thus you hold the honour of the people of insight.
Better you veil the forearm, since, for the idol's sake,
you keep your hand steeped in the heart's blood of the skilled.
Neither rose nor nightingale escaped your grief in the garden;
you keep them all crying aloud and rending their robes.
O you who seek in the patched cloak the ready coin of Presence,
you claim a wondrous eye of insight from the unaware.
Since you are the narcissus of insight's garden, O eye and lamp,
why do you hold your head aloof from me, the heart-struck?
The jewel of Jam's cup is mined from another world;
and you would set your craving on the potter's clay.
O heart, you are the father of experience — from what cause
do you look for love and faith from these fickle boys?
You must empty out clean the purse of silver and gold
of all these greeds you keep for the silver-bodied fair.
Though roguery and drink are our sin — yet a lover said:
'This too You reckoned to the slave, and so ordained.'
Waste not the day of safety in reproach, Hafez;
what expectation do you hold from the passing world?
