Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 45
In this our age, the one companion untouched by flaw
is a flask of pure wine and a volume of ghazals.
Travel light, for the pass of well-being is narrow;
take up the cup, for precious life is beyond all price.
Not I alone am weary in the world of doing nothing;
the scholars' weariness too is from knowledge void of deeds.
To the eye of reason, on this tumultuous thoroughfare,
the world and its affairs are without stay, without worth.
Seize the ringlet of some moon-faced one, and tell no tale
that weal and woe descend from Venus and from Saturn.
My heart nursed abundant hope of union with your face;
but death, on the road of life, is the highwayman of hope.
In no cycle of time will they ever find him sober —
such is our Hafez, drunk on the wine of eternity.
