← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 44

Now that on the rose's palm stands the cup of clear wine,
with a hundred thousand tongues the nightingale sings its praise.
Call for the book of verse and take the road to the open plain;
what hour is this for the school and the dispute of the Kashsháf?
The college jurist, drunk but yesterday, gave his ruling:
'Wine is unlawful — yet finer than the wealth of pious bequests.'
Over dregs or clear you have no say — quaff it gladly,
for whatever our cupbearer has done is the very soul of grace.
Cut yourself from the crowd, and like the Anqa reckon your worth,
for the fame of the recluses rings from Qaf unto Qaf.
The chatter of the pretenders, the fancies of the fellow-hands,
is the same old tale of the gold-embroiderer and the mat-weaver.
Be silent, Hafez — these subtleties like red gold
guard well, for the city's counterfeiter is the money-changer.
