← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 438

'Salma bound fast my heart with her two side-locks;
and my soul, day upon day, keeps calling out to me.'
O idol, take pity on me, the heart-bereft one;
'and join me to you, in despite of all my foes.'
O beloved, in the grief of your love's mad passion,
'we have laid our whole trust upon the Lord of His servants.'
'O you who chide me for loving Salma' —
you never chanced upon that lovely face.
That I, like you, in this desire — my heart, alas! —
'am one drowned in love within affection's sea.'
At Machan's foot we will pay love's ransom over;
one fault — may one fair custom redeem it from us.
This heart's own grief will devour you, willy-nilly;
else, I'd not have consented to the thing that pained you.
The heart of Hafez went into your tress's coil,
'through a dark night — and God alone is guide.'
