Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 419
Union with her is better than everlasting life;
O Lord, grant me that gift — for that is better.
She struck me with the sword, and I told no one;
for the Friend's secret is better hidden from the foe.
To die upon this door, branded a slave —
by her soul, that is better than the kingdom of the world.
For God's sake, ask my healer of my case:
at last, when will this weak one grow better?
The rose that lay trampled beneath our cypress's foot —
better were its dust than the Judas-tree's own blood.
Do not invite me, ascetic, to Paradise;
for this apple of the chin is better than that garden.
O heart, be ever the beggar of her street,
by this rule: that everlasting fortune is better.
O youth, turn not your head from the counsel of the old;
for the old one's judgment is better than the young one's luck.
One night she was saying: 'No eye has ever seen
in all the world a thing better than my ear's own pearl.'
Though the Zende-Rud is the Water of very Life,
yet our Shiraz is better than Isfahan.
The word in the mouth of the Friend is sugar;
and yet the saying of Hafez is better than that.
