Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 375
Sufi, come, that we may strip away the cloak of sanctimony,
and draw a line of nullity across this figured cant.
The cloister's vow and its votive gifts we set toward the wine;
in the tavern's water we will rinse away this hypocritical cloak.
Tomorrow, if they grant us not the garden-close of Ridwan,
we will draw the youths from the garden forth, the houris from paradise.
We will leap out light of heart, and from the banquet of the Sufis
we will plunder the wine away, and draw the fair one to our breast.
Let us make merry — else they will drag us off in bitter regret,
the day we draw the baggage of the soul away to another world.
The secret of God, sequestered within the veil of the Unseen,
in drunkenness we will draw its veil aside from off the cheek.
Where shines one glimpse of her brow, that, like the new-born moon,
we may draw the ball of the sphere into the curve of the golden stick?
Hafez, it lies not within our measure to boast in such a strain;
why do we draw our foot beyond the fringe of our own small rug?
