← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 368

Rise, that we may beg an opening from the tavern's welcoming door;
that we may sit upon the road of the Friend, and beg a heart's desire.
No wayfare-provision have we for the sanctuary of union, save
in beggary, at the tavern door, to beg a store for the road.
Though our tear, all stained with fault, keeps flowing without end,
yet as an envoy to her side we seek one pure of nature.
Let the relish of your grief's branding on our heart be forbidden us,
if ever, from the tyranny of your love's grief, we should beg redress.
The dot of your dark mole no pen may trace on the tablet of the eye,
unless from the very pupil's core we beg a drop of kohl.
The heart begged, by its own soul, a single glance from your sweet lip;
with a sugared smile your lip replied: 'A richer boon we beg.'
So long as there survives a scent-writ scroll for the love-sick heart,
from the ambergris-tracing line of yours we beg a written word.
Since your grief may nowhere be found but in a heart made glad,
we, in the hope of your grief itself, beg for a gladdened mind.
How long, O Hafez, will you sit at the door of the seminary?
Rise, that we may beg an opening from the tavern's welcoming door.
