← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 33

What need has one who chose seclusion of the spectacle?
When the Friend's street is here, what need of the open plain?
My soul, by that need which you have before God,
at last, one moment, ask what our own need is.
O king of beauty, for God's sake — we are burned to ash;
at last, ask what the beggar needs.
We are lords of need, and there is no tongue for asking;
in the presence of the Generous, what need to plead?
No tale is needed, if you intend our blood;
since our goods are yours, what need to plunder them?
The Friend's luminous heart is the world-revealing cup;
there, what need is there to declare one's own need?
Gone is the time I bore the boatman's obligation;
when the pearl came to hand, what need is there of the sea?
O pretender, be gone — I have no business with you;
the beloved ones are present — what need of enemies?
O beggar-lover, since the Friend's soul-giving lip
knows your due, what need is there to demand?
Hafez, make an end — skill will show itself of itself;
with the pretender, what need of dispute and quarrel?
