Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 323
I bend beneath a burden of my own short-handed helplessness,
for I stand ashamed before the tall and stately fair.
Perhaps a chain of hair may catch and steady my hand;
or else I shall lift up my head in sheer distraction.
Ask of my eye the changing states of the sphere,
for from night until day I lie and count the stars.
In this thanksgiving I kiss the lip of the cup,
that made me privy to the secret of the age.
If I have spoken the wine-sellers' benediction,
what of it? I but discharge the debt of a bounty received.
Of my own arm I have much thanksgiving to render,
that I have not the strength to do any man harm.
I have a head that, like Hafez, is drunk; and yet
by the grace of that Head — my Lord — I keep my hope alive.
