Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 307
Every fine point I spoke in praise of that fair form,
whoever heard it cried: 'God bless the one who speaks!'
The winning of love and the rend's abandon seemed easy at first;
at last my soul burned away in the earning of these virtues.
Hallaj, upon the gallows-head, sings this fine point sweetly;
of Shafi'i they never ask the like of these questions.
I said: 'When will you take pity on my strengthless soul?'
She said: 'At the hour when the soul is no barrier between us.'
I have given my heart to a playful, lover-slaying idol,
'of pleasing dispositions, of praiseworthy qualities.'
In very cloistered retirement I was, like your drunken eye;
and now I have turned toward the drunk, like your arching brow.
From the water of the eye I have seen Noah's flood a hundred times;
yet from the tablet of my breast your image was never effaced.
O Friend, the hand of Hafez is a charm against the evil eye;
O Lord, may I see it hung, a talisman, upon your neck!
