← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 301

O you to whom my wounded heart is bound by your lips' salt-troth,
keep faith with that bond, for I am going — God be with you.
You are that pure jewel whose fair remembrance, in the world of holiness,
was the very fruit of the angels' hymns of praise.
If any doubt of my sincerity remains, then test me:
none knows the assay of pure gold like the touchstone.
You had promised: 'I'll grow tipsy and grant you two kisses';
the pledge outran all bounds — and we saw neither two nor one.
Unfold the laughing pistachio of your mouth and scatter sweetness;
cast not the people into doubt about your very lips.
I'll overturn the sphere itself, should it wheel against my will;
I am not one to suffer scorn from the turning wheel of heaven.
Since to his own Hafez you will not leave him free,
O rival, draw back from him but a step or two.
