Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 279
How happy is Shiraz, and its state beyond compare!
O Lord, preserve it ever from the ruin of decline.
A hundred praises of God upon our Ruknabad,
whose limpid stream bestows the very life of Khizr!
Between Ja'farabad and the plain of Musalla
its north wind comes to us all blended with ambergris.
Come to Shiraz, and seek the grace of the Holy Spirit
from the men of perfection who dwell within her walls.
For who would there so much as name the sweets of Egypt,
where the sweet-lipped ones have left them no cause to blush?
O breeze, of that gay and wine-flushed gypsy of mine—
what tidings do you bring? How fares her state?
If that sweet-faced boy should spill my blood,
O heart, absolve him of it, as of a mother's milk.
For God's sake, wake me not out of my sleep,
for I keep a sweet seclusion with her image.
Why, Hafez, when you so trembled at the thought of parting,
did you give no thanks for the days of union?
