Ghazal 269
O heart, your well-wisher's fortune suffices as travelling-mate;
the breeze of Shiraz's garden suffices as courier of your road.
Journey no more, O dervish, from the Beloved's abode,
for the inward voyage and your convent's corner suffice you.
And if a grief spring its ambush from some corner of the heart,
the sanctuary of the Magian Elder's court suffices as refuge.
Sit at the head of the tavern-bench and drink the wine-cup,
for this much of the world's wealth and rank suffices you.
Seek no increase; make your task an easy one on yourself:
a flask of ruby wine, and an idol moon-like, suffice you.
The sphere hands the reins of desire to ignorant men;
you are a man of worth and lore—this one sin suffices.
The longing for the well-loved dwelling, the old friend's covenant,
suffice as your excuse to the wayfarers who have journeyed on.
Do not grow used to the bounty of others; in both the worlds
God's good pleasure and the king's largesse suffice you.
There is no need of any other litany, O Hafez;
your midnight prayer and your lesson at dawn suffice you.
