Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 259
It is I who have unclosed my eye to the sight of the Friend;
what thanks can I give you, O Contriver, cherisher of the slave?
Tell him who craves affliction: wash not the dust from your cheek,
for the dust of pleading's street is the alchemy of desire.
Turn not the rein from the hardships of the Path, O heart,
for the man of the road takes no thought of valley or height.
If the lover make not his ablution with the heart's own blood,
by the mufti of love's decree his prayer stands void.
In this borrowed, fleeting station, grasp nothing but the cup;
in this little playhouse, stake nothing but love away.
For half a kiss, buy the prayer of one whose heart is true,
that it may ward the enemy's guile from your soul and frame.
The melody of the sound of Hafez's ghazals, from Shiraz,
has cast the murmur of love abroad through Hijaz and Iraq.
