Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 237
My breath expires, and no desire of you comes forth;
alas, that my fortune will not rouse itself from sleep.
The breeze cast into my eye a dust from her street,
so that the water of life comes no more into my sight.
Until I take your lofty stature into my embrace,
the tree of my longing and desire will bear no fruit.
Save by the heart-adorning face of our Beloved — else
by no other means at all does the work come forth.
My heart made its dwelling in your tress, having seen a lovely darkness;
and from that hapless, stricken wanderer no word comes back.
From the bow of sincerity I loosed a thousand arrows of prayer,
but what avails it — not one comes home to its effect.
Enough for me the heart's converse with the dawn breeze;
but, such is my luck, tonight the dawn will not come.
In this daydream the span of my life has run to its end, and still
the calamity of your black tress comes to no end.
So shy of every soul has the heart of Hafez grown
that now from the ring of your tress it will not come forth.
