Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 144
Into the secret of Jamshid's cup you shall be able to gaze
only when you make the tavern's dust the collyrium of your eyes.
Be never without wine and minstrel — for beneath the vault of heaven
with such a song you have the power to drive all grief from the heart.
The rose of your desire will lift its veil to you at last
only when you learn to serve it, as the breeze of dawn attends.
Beggary at the tavern's threshold is a rare and wondrous elixir;
perform this deed, and you shall have the power to turn mere dust to gold.
Toward the way-stage of love set forward but a single step,
for you will reap rich profits, if you have the power to make this journey.
You, who never once step forth beyond the house of your own nature —
how can you have the power to reach the alley of the Path?
The beauty of the Friend wears neither veil nor curtain — even so,
first lay the dust along the road, that you may have the power to see.
Come — the cure for the taste of Presence and for the ordering of affairs
you have the power to work through the grace poured out by the men of insight.
But while you crave the loved one's lip and still the cup of wine,
cherish no hope that you shall have the power to work aught else.
O heart, if you attain some knowledge of the light of guidance,
then, like the candle, laughing, you shall have the power to yield your head.
If you but heed this kingly counsel, Hafez, then at last
you shall have the power to pass along the highroad of the Truth.
