Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 141
Did you behold, O heart, what the grief of love has wrought once more —
how, when the heart-thief left, it dealt with her most faithful friend?
Alas for that enchanting eye — what mischief it let loose;
alas for that drunken one — what she did to the sober folk!
My tears took on the flush of twilight from the loved one's cold neglect;
behold the pitiless star — what it has wrought within this tale.
A lightning flashed at dawn from Layla's far-off dwelling-place;
oh, what it did to the ripened harvest of heart-wounded Majnun!
Cupbearer, give me the cup of wine — for what the Painter of the Unseen
wrought there behind the veil of secrets, none was made to know.
He who inscribed with figures full this bowl of enamelled blue —
no soul has ever learned what he wrought in the compass's slow turn.
The thought of love struck grief's own fire in Hafez's heart and burned it whole;
behold the ancient friend — see what he dealt to his friend!
