Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 137
She bore my heart away and hid her face from me outright;
for God's sake, tell me — with whom else can such a game be played?
The night of my loneliness was set upon my very life,
yet the mere fancy of her face showed graces without bound.
Why should I not, like the tulip, wear a heart all steeped in blood,
when her narcissus-eye has left us reeling, heavy-drunk?
To whom shall I complain, that with this pain that sears the soul
my healer laid a plot against the helpless sufferer's life?
So did she burn me, like the candle, that above my head
the flask took up its weeping and the lute its wailing cry.
O breeze, if you hold any cure — the hour, the hour is now,
for the ache of longing has laid siege against my life.
How, among the tender-hearted, could one bear to speak it out —
that our own beloved said such words, and dealt us such a blow?
The enemy would never work on Hafez's soul such harm
as did the arrow of the eye beneath that archer-brow.
