Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 132
A gnostic made his cleansing in the limpid water of the wine
at the first light of morning, when he came to greet the tavern-door.
No sooner had the golden goblet of the sun gone down to hide
than the crescent of the feast gave its sign around the passing cup.
How blest the prayer and pleading of the man who, out of very pain,
made his ablution with the eye's clear water and the liver's blood.
The imam-lord, who long had held the foremost place at prayer,
fulled and bleached his cloak anew in the crushed daughter of the vine.
My heart bought riot at the price of life from that one curling lock;
what gain it saw I cannot tell, that it should strike such trade.
Should the leader of the congregation ask for me today,
bear him the word that Hafez has performed his cleansing with the wine.
