Ghazal 397
Enter our door, and light our night-chamber with your face;
perfume with musk the air where spirits are at prayer.
Should the jurist counsel you: 'Play not the game of love,'
hand him a cup and say: 'Come, gladden your dry brain.'
To the Friend's eye and eyebrow I have pledged both heart and soul;
come, come, and gaze your fill on that arch and that fair vista.
The star of parting's night rains down not one thin ray;
climb to the palace roof — go, kindle the moon for a lamp.
Tell Eden's treasurer: bear off, as a gift for Paradise,
the dust of this assembly, for aloes to the censer.
From these worldly bonds and this patched frock I am hard-pressed;
with one sly glance, from Sufi turn me a wild qalandar.
Since the meadow's beauties are the vassals of your grace,
cast your coquetry on the jasmine, your splendour on the pine.
The meddling self spins many a tale, O cupbearer;
let not your task slip from your hand — pour the wine to the cup.
The ray of beauty veiled the very eye that would perceive;
come, and set ablaze the pavilion of the sun.
To crave the sugar of your union lay beyond our reach;
then refer me to your ruby lip, sweet as very sugar.
Kiss first the goblet's rim, then pass it to the drunk;
by that fine art make merry the brains of the boon-friends.
