← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 339

When the image of your face passes across the eye's rose-garden,
the heart comes forth to behold it, toward the window of the eye.
No prospect do I see worthy to be your resting-place,
save that I — of all the world — am that appointed nook, the eye.
Come, that ruby and pearl, in tribute to your coming,
I may draw from the treasure-house of the heart out to the window of the eye.
At dawn my flowing tear was bent on wreck and ruin,
had not the heart's-blood caught and held the hem of the eye.
The first day that I saw your face, my heart declared:
'Should any breach befall, my blood is on the neck of the eye.'
In hope of tidings of your union, till dawn last night
upon the wind's own road I set the bright lamp of the eye.
By that humanity whereby you hold Hafez's ailing heart,
strike it not with the man-felling, heart-piercing arrow of the eye.
