← Fāl-e Hāfez
Un presagio da Hafez

Ghazal 305

In the season of the rose I grew ashamed of my vow against wine;
may no one ever be ashamed of an unbecoming deed!
Our piety is all a snare set in the road; and I, in this dispute,
am in no way ashamed before the fair witness and the cupbearer.
It may be the Friend, in her generous nature, will not be vexed with us,
for we are weary of the asking, and ashamed of the reply.
For the blood that flowed last night from the small chamber of the eye,
we stood ashamed before the wayfarers who passed in sleep.
It is fitting if the drunken narcissus bow its head,
for it grew ashamed before the manner of that reproachful eye.
You are the one more lovely than the sun; and thanks to God
that before you I stand not shamed in the very face of the sun.
The Water of Khizr drew the veil of darkness on itself, for it grew
ashamed before the verse of Hafez, and that nature clear as water.
