Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 178
Whoever became confidant of the heart stayed in the Friend's own sanctuary;
and whoever knew not this high work remained behind in denial.
If my heart broke forth from the veil, then do not lay the fault to me;
thank God it did not linger on within the veil of vain surmise.
The Sufis took back from the pledge of wine the whole of their goods entire;
it was our own cloak alone that stayed behind at the wine-house.
The censor turned into a shaikh and forgot his own debauch;
it is our tale alone that stayed abroad at every market-head.
Every ruby wine that we received from that hand of crystal fair
turned to the water of regret, and stayed in the pearl-shedding eye.
Save this heart of mine, that from eternity to eternity went a lover,
we have never heard of any who stayed forever at love's own work.
It sickened, hoping its narcissus might grow to be like your eye;
your art it never gained at all, and it stayed behind still sick.
I have found nothing sweeter yet than the sound of the word of love —
a keepsake left behind within this ever-turning dome.
I had a cloak, and it used to cover a hundred faults of mine;
the cloak went pledged for wine and minstrel, and the girdle stayed behind.
Before your beauty the master-painter of Cathay was so struck dumb
that the tale of it stayed everywhere, on every door and wall.
To the spectacle-ground of her tress the heart of Hafez went one day;
it went to return, and there forever a captive it remained.
