Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 166
The day of parting, the night of severance from the Friend, are ended at last;
I cast this augury — the star wheeled on, and the ordeal is ended at last.
All that disdain and pampered pomp that autumn used to command
fell, at the tread of the spring's own wind, to nothing, and is ended at last.
Thanks be to God that, by the fortune of the rose's tilted cap,
December's arrogance and the thorn's proud show are ended at last.
The morning of hope, that lay a recluse behind the veil of the unseen —
say to it: Come forth, for the labour of the dark night is ended at last.
That long turmoil of endless nights, that anguish of the heart,
in the shadow of the Friend's dark tress are gathered, and ended at last.
I set no faith yet in the treachery of these faithless days —
this tale of grief that, in the Friend's good fortune, is ended at last.
Cupbearer, you were gracious — may your cup stand brimmed with wine,
for by your governance the fret of the hangover is ended at last.
Though into the reckoning no one has ever entered Hafez's name,
thank God this measureless, unnumbered torment is ended at last.
