Un presagio da Hafez
Ghazal 11
Cupbearer, with the light of the wine set our cup ablaze;
minstrel, say that the world's affair has turned to our desire.
In the cup we have seen the reflection of the Beloved's face —
O you who know nothing of the joy of our ceaseless draught.
Never dies the one whose heart was quickened by love;
our permanence stands inscribed on the ledger of the world.
The coquetry and airs of the straight-statured last only
until our cypress of pine-like gait steps forth in splendor.
O breeze, if you pass by the rose-garden of the beloved,
take care to render up our message to the Beloved.
Say: why do you willfully let our name slip from your mind?
The day will come, unbidden, when you recall our name no more.
Drunkenness is sweet in the eyes of our heart-ensnaring witness;
for that they have handed over our reins to drunkenness.
I fear it will win no gain on the day of reckoning —
the Shaikh's lawful bread set against our unlawful wine.
Hafez, scatter from your eye a grain or two of tears,
that perhaps the bird of union may set its aim on our snare.
The green sea of the sky and the ship of the crescent moon
lie drowned in the bounty of our Hajji Qavam.
